## Gesred Borg receives the second TGS Fair Play Award for 2025!

Gesred Borg is the winner of the TGS Malta Fair Play Award covering April to June 2025.

This quarterly award, handed out by the Malta Sports Journalists Association and the Malta Fair Play Movement in collaboration with Together Gaming Solutions, is aimed at sporting individuals or teams who would have distinguished themselves with an altruistic gesture of fair play during official and/or non-official competitions.

During the International Tour ta’ Malta, held between 24th and 27th April 2025, Gesred Borg, a dedicated and accomplished Masters cyclist with Team Greens, demonstrated an outstanding act of sportsmanship and generosity.

During the second stage, the challenging San Martin course, Gesred remained with the race leaders and was on track for a strong stage finish. However, on the penultimate lap up the steep San Martin climb, he witnessed a mechanical failure suffered by his teammate, Joaquin Rojas, who at the time was in second place in the general classification. Joaquin’s rear derailleur broke, rendering his bike unusable.

Without hesitation, Gesred stopped mid-race and selflessly offered his own bike to Joaquin, allowing him to continue and defend his position in the Tour. This extraordinary gesture meant that Gesred sacrificed his own chances of achieving a personal result, despite having trained so hard, to support his teammate, who ultimately finished on the podium.

This act reflects the true spirit of cycling and sportsmanship.

## **Brian Alejandro Parada and Stefan Cassar receive the first TGS Fair Play Award for 2025**
Brian Alejandro Parada and Stefan Cassar (Xewkija Tigers F.C.) are the winners of the TGS Malta Fair Play Award covering January to March 2025.

This quarterly award, handed out by the Malta Sports Journalists Association and the Malta Fair Play Movement in collaboration with Together Gaming Solutions, is aimed at sporting individuals or teams who would have distinguished themselves with an altruistic gesture of fair play during official and/or non-official competitions.

The act of fair play occurred during a GFA BOV Gozo Football League First Division match between Qala Saints FC and Xewkija Tigers FC played on Sunday 19th January 2025, at the Gozo Stadium. 

The match was fiercely contested, with Xewkija taking a surprising lead while Qala attempted to recover. In the 76th minute, Xewkija who were leading 3-1, launched a counterattack. During the play, striker Brian Alejandro Parada and defender Junior Adenilson Ferreira Dos Santos sprinted toward the ball in a decisive challenge. Unfortunately, Ferreira Dos Santos suffered a serious fall, causing a concerning injury. Despite the promising scoring opportunity, Parada and his teammate Stefan Cassar instantly recognized the severity of their opponent’s injury and halted their attack to ensure immediate medical assistance for the Qala player.

“An honourable gesture to stop play in a crucial moment reflects the highest values of fair play and respect in football. Kudos to both players,” said Edward Licari, Director of Together Gaming Solutions.

## **Ryan Degiorgio and Kohath Mallia (Kalkara Regatta Club) receive the TGS Fair Play Award for July-September 2024**
Ryan Degiorgio and Kohath Mallia, who form part of the Kalkara Regatta Club's Frejgatini Category B's crew, are the winners of the TGS Malta Fair Play Award covering this year’s July-September period.

This quarterly award, handed by the Malta Sports Journalists Association and the Malta Fair Play Movement in collaboration with Together Gaming Solutions, is aimed at sporting individuals or teams who would have distinguished themselves with an altruistic gesture of fair play during official and/or non-official competitions.

On Sunday 8th September, during the latest edition of the Victory Day Regatta, the crew of Kalkara Regatta Club’s Frejgatini Category B won their race. Shortly after their victory, they noticed that Shaun Farrugia, one of Bormla’s crew, fainted. Rather than celebrating, they immediately went to assist him and requested paramedics to continue providing the necessary assistance.

“A truly inspiring show of sportsmanship, showing that care and kindness come first in competition. A big applause to Ryan Degiorgio and Kohath Mallia,” said Edward Licari, Director of Together Gaming Solutions.

## **Malta Pickleball receives the first TGS Fair Play Award for the year 2024**

The Malta National Pickleball Team are the winners of the first TGS Malta Fair Play Award for the year 2024. This quarterly award, handed by The Malta Fair Play Movement in collaboration with the Malta Sports Journalists Association and Together Gaming Solutions, is aimed at sporting individuals or teams who would have distinguished themselves with an altruistic gesture of fair play during official and/or non-official competitions.

On the 9th & 10th of March 2024, Malta Pickleball organized its very first International Team Event Tournament in Malta, held at De La Salle College. It consisted of 19+ teams and 50+ Teams.

During the 50+ Team event final which was held on the 10th of March between Malta and the UK a commendable gesture was witnessed.

During the men’s doubles match, one of the UK players, Tony Thompson, could not continue playing due to an unfortunate fall during a point which got him badly injured. Thus, this match could not be completed.
This team tournament consisted of one men’s doubles match, one ladies’ doubles match, and 2 mixed doubles matches per encounter. Thompson’s team could not carry on the final encounter without him and were ready to award Malta a walk-over, giving Malta a win and finish in the first place.

After an immediate discussion, the Malta Team decided that both Malta and the UK should be awarded a joint first. It was neither fair nor satisfactory for the Malta Team to win over the UK with a walkover due to such an unfortunate fall.

“The altruist decision of the Malta Pickleball team to share their victory with the UK team, despite an opportunity for an easy win, exemplifies the true spirit of sportsmanship,” said Edward Licari, Director of Together Gaming Solutions.

## **George Muscat presented with the fourth TGS Fair Play Award for 2023**

The Malta Sports Journalists Association (MSJA) has announced that the fourth award for the year 2023, covering the October-December-period, has been awarded to George Muscat.

The awarded act of Fair Play occurred during the 2nd race at the Malta Equidrome held on the 5th of November, during which there was an incident at the end of the race which for many went unnoticed.

Nearing the end of the race the driving bridle of mare Capuchin came loose thus putting in difficulty young driver Clint Gauci who had no way of controlling the horse and consequently unable to stop without causing an accident. Driver George Muscat on horse Boom Boom Becker realised what was happening and pulled up his horse in a way to come near enough to catch the mare by the head and thus stopping her in time for Clint Gauci to alight from the sulky without any harm.

“George Muscat's swift intervention in handling his opponent’s mare during the race exemplifies sportsmanship and altruism at its fines”, said Edward Licari, Director of Together Gaming Solutions.

## **Dylan Portelli presented with TGS Fair Play Award for the July-September period**

The Malta Sports Journalists Association (MSJA) has announced that the eleventh TGS Malta Fair Play Award, has been awarded to Dylan Portelli. This is the third award for the year 2023, covering the July-September-period.

This recently revamped award by the MSJA in collaboration with the Malta Fair Play Movement and Together Gaming Solutions, is aimed at sporting individuals or teams that would have distinguished themselves with an altruistic gesture of fair play during official and/or non-official competitions.

The awarded act of Fair Play occurred during the last edition of the Regatta Nazzjonali held at the Valletta’s Grand Harbour on the 8th of September, At the end of one of the races, Bormla Regatta Club’s rower Clive Casha was not feeling well.

As Bormla’s rower Clive Casha was transferred to a Civil Protection’s boat to receive the necessary medical assistance, his rowing partner Dennis Thornton remained alone on the rowing boat. Since they were classified with the top 3, following the Għaqda Regatta Nazzjonali’s regulations, the boat had to be taken ashore for weighing. Since Thornton couldn’t row alone, Dylan Portelli from the rival team Birgu, offered him his help. Eventually Portelli rowed together with Thornton and arrived safely to the shore, so that the rowing boat could be weighed. This is considered as an act of Fair Play, as if it wasn’t for the generous intervention of Birgu’s rower Dylan Portelli, Bormla were in high risk of losing the time limit.

## **Danica Bonello Spiteri presented with TGS Fair Play Award for the April-June period**

The Malta Sports Journalists Association (MSJA) has announced that the tenth TGS Malta Fair Play Award, has been awarded to veteran triathlete Danica Bonello Spiteri. This is the second award for the year 2023, covering the April–June-period.

This award has been recently revamped by the MSJA in collaboration with the Malta Fair Play Movement and Together Gaming Solutions.

The award is aimed at sporting individuals or teams that would have distinguished themselves with an altruistic gesture of fair play during official and/or non-official competitions.

During the sprint triathlon national championship race, held on Sunday 11th June 2023 in Salina (limits of Naxxar and St. Paul’s Bay), Maya Schembri Rodgers came out of the water first, followed by Danica Bonello Spiteri with the latter trying to chase Schembri Rodgers on the bike section with the aim to start closing the gap.

As Schembri Rogers was in sight of Bonello Spiteri, the former accidentally fell off her bike with Bonello Spiteri reaching her within seconds.

An altruistic and fair play gesture saw Bonello Spiteri slowing down to assist and eventually encouraging Maya Schembri Rodgers to get on the bike and pedal to the finish. Eventually Bonello Spiteri ended the race victorious whilst Schembri Rodgers took the second place in the Female overall.

For Danica Bonello Spiteri, it came almost naturally to stop and offer assistance to such an upcoming and promising triathlete like Maya Schembri Rodgers.

"Danica has shown us the true measure of sportsmanship: being human above competitiveness. She has definitely redefined the meaning of victory in this local competitive sport. Truly an inspiring athlete whose actions are truly laudable,” said Edward Licari, Director of Together Gaming Solutions.

## **Daniel Sowatey receives the first TGS Fair Play Award for the year 2023**

The Malta Fair Play Movement has announced the ninth TGS Malta Fair Play Award, in collaboration with the Malta Sports Journalists Association and Together Gaming Solutions. This award is aimed at sporting individuals or teams that have distinguished themselves with an altruistic gesture of fair play during official and/or non-official competitions.

The first award for the year 2023, covering the January–March period, was awarded to Daniel Sowatey.

The Ghanian defender started playing on our sister island, Gozo, in 2016 with Xagħra United F.C. and in 2019 with Victoria Hotspur. In the following year, he continued his career in Malta with Zejtun Corinthians until he moved to Vittoriosa Stars in 2022, and now he currently plays with San Gwann F.C.

Daniel Sowatey is also the founder of the Sowatey Official Foundation, which assists in the development of sports in Ghana. Recently, San Gwann F.C. and the Malta Football Player Association (MFPA) joined Sowatey in providing football equipment to Sambo4 F.C. Last year, the Sowatey Foundation donated food supplies to the Teshie Orphanage Home.
